The Department of Music at Stanford University invites applicants for the position of Lecturer in Vocal Studies, beginning on September 1, 2024. This is a full-time (100% FTE) Lecturer position with full benefits.

The ideal candidate for this position is a dynamic and creative colleague with strong communication and interpersonal skills. They should have a proven track record in teaching both individual lessons and group classes to students from diverse backgrounds and academic disciplines. Additionally, the candidate should demonstrate success in performance, thrive in a collaborative and challenging liberal arts environment, and actively contribute to a campus community that values cultural diversity and promotes multicultural understanding.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities
• Teach weekly studio voice lessons at the intermediate and advanced levels to music majors, minors, and non-majors, as well as lead voice classes accommodating a wide spectrum of student experience and ability
• Instruct courses aligned with the appointee's qualifications and departmental needs, potentially including Vocal Pedagogy, Vocal Literature, Diction, and Stage Direction
• Participate in assessment of vocal studio juries each quarter
• Serve on student capstone recital juries
• Participate in the weekly applied students’ studio voice class
• Evaluate audition materials from students seeking admission to Stanford
• Maintain an active presence within the department by attending on-campus performances and actively participating in events such as concerts, faculty recitals, and other student and faculty gatherings
• Participate on the Performance Committee, attend music department faculty meetings, and serve on committees as needed
• If interested and qualified, take on the responsibility of directing the annual departmental musical production; although a specific interest in stage directing is not mandatory for this position
• Collaborate effectively with faculty colleagues and contribute to the long-term goals of the vocal program
• Fully engage with Stanford’s scholarly and entrepreneurial environment

Qualifications / Required Skills

• Master's degree or equivalent professional experience in teaching and/or performing, comparable to a terminal degree
• Proven track record of teaching voice in an accredited higher education institution or a professional setting
• Enthusiastic commitment to instructing private lessons and group voice classes to a varied student body, spanning various academic disciplines, experience levels, and abilities
• Demonstration of a clear and engaging teaching style that encourages technically sound, healthy, stylistically informed, and expressive singing
• Evidence of expertise and significant teaching experience in both classical and non-classical vocal techniques and styles, including music theater, CCM, jazz, etc.
• Documented success in teaching students of diverse backgrounds at both undergraduate and graduate levels
• Demonstrates energy and positivity in interactions, contributing to a highly collaborative and collegial environment
• Commitment to building and nurturing a strong and connected vocal community among students and faculty
• Familiarity with languages generally encountered in the vocal and choral literature
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• High organizational skills
• Professional distinction with documented success as a singer

Salary: The starting salary for this position is $88,000 - $96,700 for 2023-24.
