Job Description / Duties
The School of Music at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign seeks a music theatre professional to join the newly named Lyric Theatre @ Illinois team as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Music, with a specialization in Musical Theatre Voice. Lyric Theatre @ Illinois is a comprehensive program embracing a broad continuum of opera and musical theatre to reflect the artistic demands of the 21st-century musical stage, on which performers must exhibit the highest standards of singing, acting and movement.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Provide musical theatre vocal instruction to undergraduate and graduate students.
• Ensure vocal health in the training and practice of lyrical and belting styles within musical theatre repertoire.
• Work with members of the Lyric Theatre @ Illinois in exploring the development of a musical theatre major.
• Actively recruit students to the program. Sustain high artistic, academic, and ethical standards while fostering effective, collegial collaboration among the disciplines of music, dance, and theatre.
Qualifications / Required Skills
Minimum Qualifications:
Candidate must have a bachelor’s degree in musical theatre or related field and have extensive professional performance experience in musical theatre. The successful candidate will have substantial experience in musical theatre vocal instruction with all voice types and particularly with female voices. The candidate should have a comprehensive knowledge of musical theatre repertoire and instruction for all voice types.
Preferred Qualifications:
• MFA or equivalent professional experience.
• Two years of university full-time teaching beyond the TA level.
• Proven experience in building or developing a degree line in musical theatre.
• Secondary area of expertise in musical theatre such as acting, auditioning, dance and/or choreography, directing or producing.
• Membership in one or more of the following organizations: SSCD, AFTRA, SAG, AEA.
• Familiarity with classical singing and European languages.
• Experience in producing a professional musical theatre showcase.
• Current affiliation and communication with professionals working nationally in casting and production of musical theatre.
Additional Information
Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Appointment Status: Clinical Assistant Professor, full-tie, non-tenure-track, nine month per year appointment.
Proposed Starting Date: August 16, 2014
