Job Description / Duties

The University of Notre Dame seeks applications for the position of Professor of the Practice (open rank, Special Professional Faculty, non-tenure track, full-time regular faculty), for a soprano, mezzo-soprano, or contralto voice, with the position slated to begin August 2016. The successful candidate will be an exceptional artist and pedagogue with a thorough knowledge of opera, oratorio, art song, and concert literature. Candidates at various stages in their careers are encouraged to apply.

Qualifications include 1) doctoral degree in vocal performance or its equivalent in professional attainment, 2) evidence of a successful and accomplished performing career, 3) experience and excellence in studio teaching to serve the needs of our undergraduate music majors and graduate-level singers in Notre Dame’s Graduate Program in Sacred Music, and 4) the ability to teach diction courses and courses in vocal literature. Administrative oversight of the undergraduate vocal performance program and an active role in the Department’s recruitment of voice students is also expected, as is service on department, college, and university committees. The Music Department is housed in the College of Arts and Letters, and successful candidates will possess the skills and desire to incorporate both performance and teaching into a liberal arts context. The person we seek should have an active performing life beyond the campus boundaries and should have an established or emerging national and even international reputation for superlative singing.
