Job Description / Duties

Southern Wesleyan University’s School of Education and Music Studies invites applications for an assistant or associate level, nine-month professor position in Music within its Music Department. This position (Director of Choral Activities), which will begin August 2023, is located at SWU’s main campus in Central, South Carolina. Southern Wesleyan University’s music programs are fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM).

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Envision and implement a multi-year plan to grow the choral/vocal music program. Direct choral ensembles and teach the two-semester conducting track.

1. Teach applied lessons in an area of specialty—either choral or vocal. Recruit students to participate in ensembles and to programs of study in music. Contribute to musical performances in the Music Studies Department.
2. Within the area of specialty: a) coordinate ensemble performances on campus and in communities, schools, churches throughout the region and b) foster a close-knit community between students and adjunct faculty.
3. Teach and develop courses in music depending on the university’s need, the candidate’s expertise, and future professional development goals.
4. Actively participate in music scholarship and/or performance activity through research presentations at conferences, publication, or performances at festivals and schools across the region, nationally, and internationally.
5. Coordinate choral festivals developed to promote recruitment efforts.
6. Advise students in their academic progress and demonstrate servant-leadership by engaging in service activities within the university and the larger community.

Qualifications / Required Skills

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS
1. A doctorate in Music is preferred; a master’s degree in Music or a master’s degree with at least 18 hours in Music is required. The preferred candidate will have secondary school and university experience in teaching music courses, an active research or performance program, demonstrated leadership and administrative abilities, and the initiative to develop music courses consistent with the mission of SWU. Desire and experience in integrating the Christian faith with the teaching and practice of the discipline of music are essential. The ideal candidate should have an ability to engage with one or more developing trends in 21st century music curricula. For example: music education experience; music entrepreneurship; music technology; curricular synthesis; creativity; and global artistry. The entry level of the candidate will be determined by terminal degree, qualifications, and experience.
2. Applicants selected for interview will be asked to provide: 1) a two-page writing sample on some aspect of choral music that displays scholarly use of the language; 2) a video of a 20-minute choir rehearsal; and 3) a video of a representative choral performance.
