Job Description / Duties
The Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College invites applications for a full-time Administrative and Professional Staff position as Opera Coach beginning in the 2021-22 academic year. Oberlin’s Vocal Studies Division embraces a team approach to educating gifted undergraduate singers, and coaches work collaboratively with voice faculty and members of the Division.
The Vocal Studies Division, which includes members of the Voice and Opera departments, Conducting and Ensembles Division, and Keyboard Studies Division, specializes in training undergraduate singers through private voice instruction, opera productions, choral ensembles, and vocal coaching. Previous graduates enjoy distinguished careers, winning major competitions and appearing regularly in the world’s most important venues. Interested students also have the opportunity to engage in Oberlin’s legacy of excellence in music education and social justice by taking classes in the Division of Pedagogy, Advocacy, and Community Engagement (PACE).
Responsibilities:
Musical coordination of mainstage opera performances (including coaching singers, preparing audition excerpts, scheduling musical rehearsals, serving on opera casting and title committees, liaising between conductor and cast, and playing for musical and staging rehearsals as assigned);
Musical preparation of opera theater classes (coordinating with stage directors and voice faculty);
Coaching of operatic and recital repertoire;
Collaborative work as assigned, including masterclasses, recitals, opera scenes, and auditions.
Qualifications / Required Skills
Graduate degree in collaborative piano or equivalent professional experience;
Broad knowledge of operatic, recital and concert vocal literature;
Expertise in Italian, French, English and German languages and lyric diction (knowledge of other languages desirable);
Excellent vocal coaching skills;
Excellent piano and sight-reading skills;
Strong communication and organization skills;
Ability to work collaboratively with voice faculty, conductors and stage directors.
