SPAMALERT...
...it's not the latest musical, but unfortunately, "spam" e-mail is causing "a lot" of problems. We have learned of what appears to be an e-mail phishing attack, a fraudulent process used by spammers to acquire sensitive information. We can assure you that this is not the result of the proprietary database of NATS membership data being compromised.
NATS protects its membership data with the utmost care and individual e-mail addresses are not shared in ways not approved by the member. However, there are often a number of places that NATS member emails or your connection with NATS may be listed, such as chapter websites and personal or institutional bios on webpages. Spammers have sophisticated ways of mining this information. This is further confirmed by the fact that some have received the same fraudulent email but indicating a different affiliation such as MTNA or another organization.
- Be aware. A recent fraudulent message has come across with "Instructor Needed" as the subject and "my daughter is interested in music, please get back to me with your area zip code" as part of the message.
- Stay diligent and delete. Do not act on any of these types of emails or click any links that may be within the email.
- Be proactive. If you manage a NATS Chapter website, make sure that you encrypt any e-mail addresses that may be listed on the site.
